Some things that popped out during discussion:
  • The notion of dumbing down education; to subdue the public to make them more managable?
  • What are the motives to get an education? To make money? Develop skills to be a productive member of society? Develop oneself ?

  1. Implicit in any form of schooling is an assumption about how people will lead their lives. So beneath the questions of what do we teach kids, is the question of what are people going to do with their lives in general, so that we can teach them to get there? But of course schooling has the potential to steer people's lives in a general direction. So then we should be asking "is our plan for what people should do with their lives still valid and in accordance with some other principles we agree with?"
