2013 Sewing at Elna
I have
some juicy conversations at Elna, Cavendish. I arrived to be told
that the machine Ive been working on has been sold! I had become
quite attached to it! I spoke to the new owner, who responded to the
piece in an enthusiastic and encouraging way. Her comments on the
state of education were pessimistic. She feels that the standards
have dropped dramatically in public schooling, leaving private
schools as the only viable option. She is encouraging her
grandchildren to emigrate.
Another
woman stated that education limits people by narrowing them into
specific fields. This discourages development and involvement in
areas not covered through education.
She does
not have a matric and runs and owns her own business and is proud of
and happy with her achievements.
Another
woman, a mother of an adolescent girl, spoke of her frustration with
her daughter. Her daughter has no interest in her school work. The
mother has sent her to a private school thinking that this would
develop a desire for learning and school work, and it has not.
