Knitting Circles 15 October
I asked
if the students they were adequately prepared, by school, for tertiary studies.
Some
felt they weren't and were at a disadvantage. The majority felt they were,
especially coming from model c schools (government schools which are furthered
subsidised by parents). Although they didn't study subjects like Design at
school (and have gone onto a degree in design), they feel that the standard of
education prepared them sufficiently to deal with 1st year.
The
conversation explored attitudes toward learning; if a culture and enthusiastic
attitude toward studying and learning is cultivated at an earlier stage of
development, learning becomes part of life.
We
also discussed how some teachers, even though they have classes of 50, are able
to command respect from learners, having disciplined and orderly classrooms.
Teaching
is a vocation and ought to be respected as such. Not everyone can teach, and
the view that it is just a job becomes an injustice to the field and to
learners.
