Knitting with Sita 25 October

I was at a dinner party on Saturday Night, in the company of a professor, doctoral student and a sculpture lecturer.
I have noticed a grim tension which academics hold ….. Something like a self-congratulatory-cats-got-the-cream rubbing against a horror of how much more there is to know. Bouncing in the perilous spaces of ‘know’-ledge, spaces where the arrogance of the rational mind can reach Dubaian heights.
A theme which emerged was a comparison between the attitudes of contemporary students, to the time when we were students… 80’s..Apartheid times. And how during those times, if one was not subversive, then you were the enemy… of course this is in the liberal university contexts. It was questioned where is the subversion among the current young minds?
  • What is there to fight for?
  • Does fighting for something make it worthwhile?
  • Is hipsterism…a preoccupation with nostalgia, vintage, pre-hekno (techno) the contemporary subversion
  • Or is it steampunk
  • Maybe we have found other forms
  • Maybe its no longer a valid method
  • Subversion has just become another font, the name of a new perfume
