There have been some conversations:
It emerged
from one, which the topic was around the size of classes and the
non-streaming of classes; that a class consists of students with
higher/lower aptitudes’/abilities. The comment was that the
stronger students finish their work really quickly, get bored and
start misbehaving. We discussed how these students could be used as
tutors to help other students and the teachers. There could be high
benefits from this arrangement. What stands in the way of such
thinking and action is often a fear of relinquishing power from the
teacher. These models need to be revised. Is it not more powerful to
share power than to wield it?
In a
conversation around tertiary teaching/lecturing, it emerged the
necessity for lecturers to be involved in industry. This would keep
the lecturer in touch with what is happening in the out-there world,
be less idealistic and more pragmatic. Theory, projects, skills and
techniques would be more viable and less fantastic. It would probably
mean that the syllabus would be more aligned with what is going on in
the world, anticipating what’s emerging, rather than reinforcing
models which become fast obsolete.
